Cable General Information
The terminology cable internet access refers to the transmission of an
Internet service over a cable modem. The wide spread of cable modems, along
with DSL technology, has allowed for broadband Internet access in many
countries. Unlike its counterpart DSL, cable internet access isn’t distance sensitive;
your connection will be optimal regardless of where you’re
located. They require very little installation,
unlike satellite and they are always connected to the internet so there’s never
a wait to connect.
Cable Vs. DSL
In comparison, DSL usually offers a slower speed but with lower latency and
more variance between service packages. With DSL service quality is also a lot
more reliant on the customer’s location in relation to the phone companies nearest
central office or terminal.
The two largest disadvantages to cable Internet access:
Residential broadband network technologies, such as cable provide
a fixed amount of bandwidth that is shared by the population of users on the
network (in example of cable, other users in the neighborhood share the
provided bandwidth). Therefore, connection speed can largely vary depending on
how many users you're currently sharing the network with.
Cable
Internet providers are often reluctant to offer cable Internet access without combining
it into a cable television service. They usually do this through offering a
higher rate for cable modem service, than offer a package deal were you can get
cable internet access and television together at a reduced price. However some
cable internet access providers that are able to resell cable internet access from
cable companies usually don’t enforce these higher prices.
